Beginning Major Scales for Saxophone

These exercises are designed to establish a firm grasp of major scales.

Line A is the scale from “Root” to “Octave;” Line B is the inverse of the scale, from “Octave” to “Root.” Each scale degree is numbered to show it’s relation to the “Root.” Knowing these relations will be essential for later subjects of music theory and improvisation.

Lines C and D begin working the scale past the confines of the octave, covering more of the range of the saxophone.

Lines E and F introduce the idea of the scale taking a “shape.” Beginning with the “shape” of alternating 3rds.
